Filling out the FAFSA

• ASSET and DACA students can complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.FAFSA.gov. They can also print the application, fill it out, and hand in a physical copy to the Office of Financial Aid.
• Although students will be rejected for federal aid, the form allows the Office of Financial Aid to determine a student’s financial need.

Social Security Format on the FAFSA

• If the student has an assigned Social Security Number (SSN) through DACA or some other temporary immigration relief program, they can submit their assigned SSN.
• If a student does not have any assigned SSN or would prefer not to submit their DACA-assigned SSN, they should use the following format, 001-01-0001, if that number does not work you will need to increase the last digit by one, Example: 001-01-0002, 001-01-0003, 001-01-0004 etc. until an available number is reached.
• If the student has DACA, but their parents are undocumented and do not have a Social Security Number (SSN), they must not misrepresent themselves on the FAFSA application.
• While students are not permitted to use all zeroes as their SSN, undocumented parents should continue to use all zeroes.
• If undocumented parents have and use an Individual Taxpayer identification Number (ITIN) to file taxes, DO NOT place the ITIN in place of a social security number.

Signatures on the FAFSA

• There’s a four-digit PIN number that’s used when filling out the FAFSA and this PIN becomes the electronic signature on the form. However, a student’s parents don’t have Social Security numbers, they can’t create a PIN.
• What should be done to complete the FAFSA? Students need to create their own PIN. Then, once they’re done filling out the FAFSA, they must print out the signature page at the end, have their parent physically sign it, and then mail it to the federal government or turn in a physical copy to the UCCS Office of Financial Aid, who will process the application for you.

• You can still submit the FAFSA if your parents are undocumented. When the application asks for your parents’ social security numbers, you can enter 000-00-0000.
• If undocumented parents have and use an Individual Taxpayer identification Number (ITIN) to file taxes, DO NOT place the ITIN in place of a social security number.
